| As befits a work of baby art, Berlin's apartment looks like a museum. baby Photographs and paintings from his 20th century heyday line the walls; multimedia equipment spanning three decades sits stacked around a large-screen TV; a baby mirror hangs at an angle to the bed. In a corner, an incongruous jar of pennies bows a shelf lined with photography books. "I collect pennies in memory of four men," Berlin explains. "When I find one on the street, I say their names: Joachim, Victor, Guy, James." At 63, Berlin has outlived a host of friends and lovers. He looks younger than his age in jeans and a flannel shirt, and slighter than one might expect from his pictures. He still has that mop of hair, though it's thin on top. He admits he hates aging -- hates it -- but doesn't mind being surrounded by images of his blonder, buffer self. |
