The efficiency of drug therapy can also be modulated by nutrients and, conversely, drug therapy can influence the nutritional and metabolic status of the body. Despite our recognition of these effects, no scientific society has focussed upon the molecular mechanisms of action of nutrients and drugs and their mutual interactions. The International Society for Molecular Nutrition and Therapy was established in 1992 to focus academic upon the molecular mechanisms responsible for the therapeutic effects of nutrients academic and drugs in chronic diseases as well as their possible interactions. Besides highlighting these mechanisms, the objective of the Society is to provide academic guidelines for the optimization of dietary prevention of diseases and the dietary optimization of each therapeutic drug approach. These goals have not been efficiently achieved in existing scientific societies which represent traditional disciplines or do not focus upon molecular mechanisms. Thus, there is a need to bring together nutritionists, pharmacologists, biochemists, pathologists, physiologists, toxicologists, molecular biologists, and clinicians to define the molecular mechanisms underlying the specific effects (beneficial or adverse) of nutrients and drugs in health and disease.
